Seven Apples, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1910, gathers a loose pile of apples and pears on a rumpled white cloth, their skins built from strokes of red, yellow, and green laid down with the broad, confident touch of Renoir's late style. Painted at Les Collettes, his estate at Cagnes-sur-Mer, in the last decade of his life, the still life reflects the simplified, sensuous handling Renoir favored once arthritis had limited his mobility but not his appetite for color and paint. Fruit and flowers were a steady subject for him in these final years, offering a way to keep painting daily without needing to travel far from his studio.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1910.
