The Banks of the Seine at Champrosay (La Seine à Champrosay), painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876, looks down a windswept bank of tall reeds toward a wide bend of the Seine, the river rendered in cool blues and lavenders against a far shore of yellow-green fields and a lone tree catching the light at right. Renoir painted this view in September 1876 while visiting the novelist Alphonse Daudet at Champrosay, one of the rare instances of pure landscape in his career; the painting later passed through the collection of fellow painter and patron Gustave Caillebotte before entering the Musée d'Orsay. The diagonal sweep of the riverbank and the play of wind through the grasses are characteristic of Renoir's Impressionist handling of natural light and movement.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1876.

The Banks of the Seine at Champrosay (La Seine à Champrosay), 1876 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Impressionist River Canvas Print.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in warmer, golden tones, with a warm cream-white sky and golden-yellow grasses along the bank, giving the whole scene a brighter, sunnier feel. Other reproductions of this same painting, with slightly different color rendering, are also available in our collection.
