Seascape at Saintes-Maries, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, captures the Mediterranean horizon off the fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where small boats with yellow and red sails ride choppy, wind-driven swells rendered in thick, textured strokes of blue, green, and violet. Painted during a week-long excursion from Arles in June of that year, the work is part of a small series of marine paintings that let Van Gogh push his colour and brushwork to full intensity, capturing the restless motion of wind and water. Now held in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow, it remains one of the freshest and most vivid seascapes he ever produced.
