Seascape, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1879, captures a restless stretch of open water beneath a storm-tinged sky, its heavy blue clouds parting over rolling green-blue waves and foaming surf. Painted while Renoir was staying with his patron Paul Bérard at Wargemont on the Normandy coast, it is an unusual subject for an artist otherwise drawn to sunlit, calm scenes, using loose, broken brushwork to render the changing light and motion of water rather than a fixed, literal view.
