Seafront, Fécamp (Fécamp, bord de mer), painted by Claude Monet in 1881 captures churning surf rolling over the shingle beach beneath the tall chalk cliffs of Fécamp, under a heavy silver sky broken by pale light on the horizon. Monet spent the spring of 1881 working at this Norman fishing port, studying the sea in restless, changing weather from the shoreline itself. The canvas belongs to the great Normandy coast campaigns of the early 1880s that would later carry him to Pourville and the cliffs of Étretat.
