Sea and Cliffs, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1885, looks out across a sun-warmed harbor toward pale chalk cliffs rising above the water, with fishing boats and their colored sails crossing the bay below. Loose, sun-bright brushwork in ochre, gold, and blue captures the reflected light of the Normandy coast, a favorite subject for Renoir during his travels along the French seaside. The painting belongs to the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
