San Giorgio Maggiore (Saint-Georges Majeur), painted by Claude Monet in 1908 looks across the Venetian lagoon toward the island church, its campanile and dome dissolving into a haze of rose, gold and turquoise light. Two gondolas drift in the foreground, their dark hulls anchoring the shimmering expanse of water that fills most of the canvas. Monet painted the motif during his only visit to Venice in the autumn of 1908, a late campaign that produced some of the most atmospheric works of his career.
