San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk (Saint-Georges Majeur au crépuscule), painted by Claude Monet in 1908 sets the island monastery in dark silhouette against a blazing Venetian sunset of orange, rose and violet. Its bell tower and dome dissolve into the glowing haze while broken strokes of color shimmer across the rippling water of the lagoon. Painted during the artist only visit to Venice in 1908, the work shows an aging Monet pushing color and light toward the edge of abstraction.
