Monet painted the scene during his long summer stay of 1867 at his aunt's house in this coastal town near Le Havre, turning away from its holiday crowds to record the everyday life of the working shore. This rendition is presented in a cooler, silver-toned palette of the composition now held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
