The Saint-Lazare Station (La Gare Saint-Lazare), painted by Claude Monet in 1877 shows a locomotive arriving beneath the great iron-and-glass train shed, its billowing clouds of blue-white steam rising toward the roof while the Pont de l'Europe and pale Haussmann facades glow in the daylight beyond. It is the most famous of the twelve views of the station Monet painted in early 1877, when he set up his easel on the platforms to capture the energy of modern Paris. Eight of these canvases appeared at the third Impressionist exhibition that spring, and this one now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1877.
