Sagittarius and Corona Australis Celestial Map, c. 1824 by Sidney Hall depicts the archer-centaur Sagittarius drawing his bow across the southern sky, framed by the laurel wreath of Corona Australis and the instruments Microscopium and Telescopium, with each star originally pierced through so the card could be held to a candle and read like the true night sky. The plate comes from Hall's celebrated Urania's Mirror series, and Sidney Hall (1788?–1831) was a British engraver and cartographer known for his lively, richly colored early 19th-century star atlases.
Artist: Sidney Hall (1788?–1831). Date: 1824.
