Rough Sea at Étretat (Grosse mer à Étretat), painted by Claude Monet around 1868-1869, gathers a huddle of onlookers on the beach as heavy surf thunders ashore beneath a bruised gray sky, the chalk cliff of Étretat rising at the left. Monet builds the scene from broad, confident strokes of charcoal, cream and sand, catching the raw drama of the Channel in winter. One of his early Normandy seascapes, the canvas anticipates a lifelong fascination with the sea and now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
