Rough Sea at Étretat (Grosse Mer à Étretat), painted by Claude Monet around 1868-69 captures a storm surging against the Normandy coast, where great white breakers roll toward a huddle of onlookers gathered on the shingle beach. At the left the dark cliff and arch of Étretat loom through the spray beneath a heavy gray sky. Painted early in Monet's career and now in the Musée d'Orsay, the canvas announces the fascination with the Channel coast and its dramatic weather that he would pursue for decades.
