Rock Grous, by John James Audubon presents a pair of rock grous among high mountain crags, one in full white winter plumage and the other still in mottled summer brown, illustrating the species’ dramatic seasonal change. Audubon (American, 1785-1851) made the bird, today known as the rock ptarmigan, plate 368 of his monumental The Birds of America, celebrated for its dynamic, naturalistic poses.
Artist: John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851). Date: c. 1837 (The Birds of America, Plate CCCLXVIII).
