The Road to Chailly (Le Pavé de Chailly), painted by Claude Monet around 1865 shows the paved road running past the edge of the Fontainebleau forest near the village of Chailly-en-Bière. Tall trees with russet autumn foliage rise beside the empty roadway while a pale sky opens above the receding line of the woods. Monet painted here in his early twenties while preparing his ambitious Déjeuner sur l'herbe project, and this canvas, now in the Musée d'Orsay, marks his formative years of open-air painting before Impressionism took shape.
