Road of La Roche-Guyon (Route de La Roche-Guyon), painted by Claude Monet around 1880 looks down a broad sunlit road as it sweeps toward the village and the chalk escarpment rising beyond, sketched in light blues, ochres and touches of pink. Slender wind-bent trees line the right verge while long shadows slip across the pale roadway under a softly clouded sky. Painted in the countryside near Vétheuil after the harsh winter of 1879-80, the canvas marks Monet's return to a brighter palette at the opening of the new decade.
