Rhône Glacier by John Singer Sargent depicts a jagged, snow-crowned Alpine peak with a broad glacier tongue descending between two rocky mountain walls into the valley below, rendered in soft lavender, brown, and white watercolor washes. Sargent (1856–1925), later celebrated as the leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era, painted this alpine study at just fourteen years old during an 1870 family trip to Switzerland's Bernese Alps, part of the sketchbook now known as his “Splendid Mountain Watercolours.”
Artist: John Singer Sargent (1856–1925). Date: c. 1870.
