Renoir’s House at Essoyes, 1906, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, looks down a garden path toward the family’s country house in Champagne, its steep-roofed tower rising against a lavender evening sky as a figure in a pale orange dress crosses the foreground. Soft greens and warm ochres build the surrounding trees and hedges in Renoir’s loose, atmospheric late manner. Essoyes, his wife Aline’s hometown, became an anchor of Renoir’s later life and the setting for many of his most personal landscapes.
