Regatta at Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1874, captures a bright, breezy afternoon on the Seine as sailboats gather for a regatta near the riverside town of Argenteuil, their pale sails built up in thick, luminous strokes of cream and gold against a hazy sky. Along the near bank, a loose cluster of spectators in dark clothing watches from the reeds, their forms reduced to quick, dabbed silhouettes that convey the festive bustle of a summer weekend outing. Painted the same year Renoir helped launch the first Impressionist exhibition, the work reflects his fascination with sunlight on water and the leisure culture that drew artists such as Monet and Manet to this fashionable boating town outside Paris.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1874.
