Reclining Nude from the Back, Rest After the Bath, c. 1909, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir shows a single figure stretched out on a striped, tiger-patterned cushion, seen from behind with her red hair swept to one side, rendered in the warm rose, ochre, and golden-green tonalities that define Renoir's late period; form is built from broken color and ambient light rather than firm outline. Bathers and after-the-bath subjects were central to Renoir's late work, in which he reinterpreted the classical nude tradition through his distinctive Impressionist palette.
