Reclining Nude by the Sea, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicts a single bather stretched out along a white cloth at the edge of a rocky coastline, her head tipped back against a fold of deep red drapery as the sea stretches to the horizon behind her. The soft, fused brushwork and warm, pearly flesh tones are characteristic of Renoir's nude studies, a subject the French Impressionist (1841-1919) returned to throughout his career.
