Ravines of the Creuse at the End of the Day (Ravins de la Creuse à la Fin du Jour), painted by Claude Monet in 1889 shows the river Creuse threading between steep slopes brushed in heather purples and mossy greens, while a mass of dark craggy rock sinks into shadow as the light fades. Monet painted the scene during his intense spring 1889 campaign at Fresselines, where he returned again and again to the meeting of the two Creuse rivers under changing weather. The rugged series marked a decisive step toward his later serial method, and this canvas now belongs to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims.
