Pyramids and Sphinx, Giza, Egypt, by J. Clark depicts the pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza as imagined by an 18th-century European engraver working from travelers' accounts and earlier depictions rather than direct observation. The scene compresses the monuments into a dramatic, stylized composition that reflects the Enlightenment-era fascination with ancient Egypt long before archaeological survey standardized their true proportions. Little is documented of J. Clark beyond this signed 1735 plate, which circulated widely in later engraved reproductions of ancient-world scenery.

Artist: J. Clark. Date: 1735.
