Environs of Berneval, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1879, looks out from deep within foreground bushes toward the rolling countryside behind the cliffs at Pourville, near the small Normandy village of Berneval-sur-Mer, where thatched-roof cottages nestle among green hills. Renoir chose a deliberately unconventional viewpoint for the scene, with dense foliage framing the foreground and denying the viewer any clear footing in the landscape beyond. He painted the area while a guest of his patron Paul Bérard at the nearby château at Wargemont. The original is held in the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.
