Children of Martial Caillebotte, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1895, shows the young son and daughter of the artist's close friend Martial Caillebotte seated together on a couch, absorbed in a picture album, their faces and clothing built from warm rose, ochre, and cream tones. The brushwork is soft and feathered, modeling tender form from broken color in Renoir's mature portrait manner. The sitting fell during the months Renoir and Martial were occupied with the contested Caillebotte bequest negotiations, an experience that deepened their friendship; this photographic reproduction is drawn from a different plate of the same celebrated private-collection canvas.
