Port de Pêche, Vue de Fontarabie depuis Hendaye, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1895, looks across the bay from the French Basque town of Hendaye toward the Spanish fishing port of Fontarabie (Fuenterrabia), with boats riding at anchor and pale rooftops rising along the far shore. The palette is built on soft blues, dusty greens, and warm sun-touched ochres, the brushwork loose and atmospheric, painted en plein air during a trip Renoir made along the Basque coast in 1895, part of the restless travels that carried the Impressionist master along France's Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines through the 1890s.
