Rocks at Port-Coton, the Lion (Rochers à Port-Coton, le Lion), painted by Claude Monet in 1886 shows the jagged lion-shaped rock of Port-Coton rising from a churning emerald sea off Belle-Île, on Brittany's wild Atlantic coast. Dark cliffs frame the surf as Monet builds the water from restless strokes of green, turquoise and foaming white beneath a heavy gray sky. Created during his ten-week painting campaign on the island in the autumn of 1886, the canvas marks a dramatic turn from tranquil river scenes toward the raw power of the open sea.
