Poppy Field near Vétheuil (Champ de coquelicots près de Vétheuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1879 shows children and a woman resting among crimson poppies on a meadow above the Seine, with the village of Vétheuil and its church tower rising on the far bank. Wooded hills close the horizon beneath a windswept sky brushed in silver, blue and gray. Monet painted the scene during his Vétheuil years, when he left suburban Argenteuil for the quieter villages downstream and filled his canvases with river light and flowering fields.
