Poppy Fields near Argenteuil (Champs de coquelicots près d’Argenteuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1875 shows a flowering meadow on the plain of Gennevilliers, where scattered red poppies drift through tall grasses beneath a wide sky of tumbling white clouds. A lone figure stands waist-deep among the flowers, framed by the dark poplars rising at the left edge of the composition. Monet painted four similar views of this plain in the summer of 1875, returning to a motif he had first explored two years earlier, and this canvas now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
