Poppy Field (Champ de coquelicots), painted by Claude Monet in 1881 scatters countless red poppies through a deep summer meadow that stretches to a flat, distant horizon. A single tall poplar rises right of center against a vast pale sky, with low trees and bushes anchoring the left edge of the scene. Painted at the close of Monet’s Vétheuil years, the canvas revisits the poppy field motif he loved throughout his career and now belongs to the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
