Poppies at Argenteuil (Les Coquelicots), painted by Claude Monet in 1873 follows a woman with a blue parasol and a small child in a straw hat as they wade through tall summer grass below a hillside ablaze with scarlet poppies. The figures, often identified as Camille Monet and young Jean, drift through the meadow in a haze of green, red and silvery light. Monet painted the scene at Argenteuil the year before the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, and the beloved composition now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
