Pont-Aven, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1892, looks out over the lush Breton countryside near the artists' village of Pont-Aven, with rolling hills, scattered rooftops, and a deep canopy of trees built up in feathered, broken strokes of green and gold. The composition is anchored by a rocky outcrop and a quiet pool of water in the middle distance, rendered in soft violet-grays that set off the warm foliage surrounding it. Renoir made several visits to this Brittany artists' colony in the early 1890s, part of a broader turn in his mature work away from Paris subjects toward the sun-dappled countryside that increasingly occupied him.
