Pomegranates and Figs, c. 1917 (Grenade et figues) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Choose options
Pomegranates and Figs, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1917, gathers a small harvest of fruit on a draped white cloth: a cluster of pale green figs, a fold of dark, dusky-purple fruit, a spray of leafy greens, and a single split pomegranate glowing red-orange at the right. The brushwork is thick and warm, built up in short, feathered strokes that give the fruit a soft, tactile weight against the loosely painted tablecloth and background. Painted during Renoir's final years at Cagnes-sur-Mer, this intimate still life reflects the sustained, sensuous fascination with color and texture that defined his late work, when arthritis limited his mobility but not his output.
