Plum Trees in Blossom (Pruniers en fleurs), painted by Claude Monet in 1879, looks across an orchard of white flowering plum trees toward the red rooftops of Vétheuil, with the hill of Chênay rising beyond under a bright spring sky. Monet painted the scene near the house he rented in the Seine-side village between 1878 and 1881, a period of hardship that nonetheless yielded some of his freshest landscapes. Shown in 1880 at the gallery of La Vie Moderne, the canvas helped turn critical opinion in his favor and now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
