Plain at Auvers, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 presents the vast, flat wheat fields around Auvers-sur-Oise stretching to a low horizon beneath a heavy, wind-driven sky, the golden stubble and scattered poppies rendered in urgent, textured brushstrokes. Painted during his final weeks in the village, where he had settled to be near Dr. Paul Gachet, the work is one of a series of panoramic wheat-field landscapes in which Van Gogh sought to convey the vastness and melancholy of the open countryside. The dramatic, turbulent sky set against the flat expanse of grain reflects the emotional intensity of his last, extraordinarily productive weeks.
