Picking Flowers, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, depicts two young women gathering blossoms in a sun-dappled meadow, their light garments rendered in the same broken, feathered brushwork Renoir lavished on the surrounding wildflowers and grasses. Loose strokes of green, pink, and cream dissolve the figures gently into their surroundings, a hallmark of Renoir's mid-1870s embrace of plein-air light. The work is now held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and captures the artist at the height of early Impressionism's luminous, spontaneous style.
