Physale Cylindrique and Dauphin Ventru, by Édouard Traviès depicts a sperm whale and a rotund porpoise rendered side by side in muted teal and grey tones, following the original plate's French captions and numbering. Traviès (1809-1876), a French watercolorist and lithographer celebrated for his natural-history illustration, contributed the cetacean plates for the 1856 Furne et Cie edition of Buffon and Lacépède's Histoire Naturelle, engraved on steel by Rousseau fils.
