People of Tierra Caliente, between Papantla and Misantla, by Carlos Nebel depicts a woman balancing a terracotta vessel on her head beside a mounted traveler and his companion, with a church-fronted village rising in the misty distance. Nebel, a German-born artist and architect who traveled through Mexico between 1829 and 1834, created the hand-colored lithograph for his 1836 Paris publication documenting the country's landscapes, architecture, and everyday life.
