Peony Garden (Jardin de pivoines), painted by Claude Monet in 1887, plunges into beds of crimson and blush-pink peonies sheltered beneath golden straw canopies in the artist’s garden at Giverny. The protective awnings echo Japanese horticultural practice, a nod to the ukiyo-e aesthetics Monet admired, while the dense, energetic brushwork dissolves the flowers into pure color. Signed and dated 87, the canvas later entered the Matsukata Collection and hangs today in the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo.
