Peninsula of Saint Jean, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1888, looks across the wooded headland of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera, with a stone wall, sunlit trees, and picnicking figures framing a distant view of sailboats on the Mediterranean. The brushwork is broken and feathered, built on warm ochres, soft greens, and the luminous blues of the southern coast. Renoir traveled repeatedly to the Riviera from the late 1880s onward, drawn by the clear southern light that would shape much of his later work; the painting is now held in the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.
