Peach Trees in Blossom, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, presents a sweeping view of flowering peach orchards on the plain outside Arles, the pink and white blossoms scattered beneath a wide, cloud streaked sky as farmhouses and the pale Alpilles mountains recede into the distance. Created while Van Gogh was a patient at the hospital in Arles, the painting reflects his devotion to the seasonal renewal of the orchards even during a period of profound personal hardship, and pays homage to the Japanese landscape prints he so admired. Its confident, rhythmic brushwork and luminous palette place it among the most serene and joyful of his flowering tree paintings.
