Houses of Parliament, Setting Sun (Le Parlement, soleil couchant), painted by Claude Monet in 1900-03 shows the Gothic towers of Westminster dissolving into a violet Thames fog as a small orange sun sinks through the haze. The palace reads as a single misty silhouette, its reflection trembling in the river below in tones of lavender, rose and smoky blue. Monet studied this motif from a terrace at St Thomas Hospital across the Thames during his London campaigns and completed the canvases back in his Giverny studio, making the series one of the great meditations on light and atmosphere.
