Palm Trees at Bordighera (Palmiers à Bordighera), painted by Claude Monet in 1884 looks out from the Italian Riviera across the Bay of Ventimiglia, where feathery palms rise against hazy mountain slopes on the French border. In this version the foreground fronds and flowering scrub shimmer in cool lavenders, sea greens and touches of gold, while the distant Alps dissolve into a pearly blue haze. Monet spent the early months of 1884 at Bordighera, so dazzled by its exotic vegetation and light that he wished for a palette of diamonds and jewels.
