Orchard with Cypresses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 captures a blossoming Provençal orchard of pale pink and white fruit trees enclosed by a wooden fence, with the dark, flame-like silhouettes of cypress trees rising behind to shelter it from the mistral wind. Painted during Van Gogh’s first exuberant spring in Arles, the work is among the finest of some fourteen orchard studies he completed in a matter of weeks, working quickly to capture the fleeting blossom before it fell. The pairing of tender pink blossom against the dense, near-black cypresses creates a striking contrast that Van Gogh would return to throughout his time in Provence.
