On the Dark Road, by Hablot Knight Browne, depicts a runaway horse-drawn carriage racing through a stormy night, its driver and passenger clinging on as a team of horses gallops down a rutted country road beneath dark, roiling clouds. Browne was an English illustrator (1815-1882) who worked under the pen name “Phiz” and served as Charles Dickens’s principal illustrator for over two decades; this plate marks his first use of the atmospheric “dark plate” technique, created for the 1848 serial publication of Dickens’s novel Dombey and Son.
Artist: Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”) (1815-1882). Date: 1848.
