Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts a grove of gnarled olive trees rendered in swirling blue-green brushwork against the dramatic limestone peaks of the Alpilles and a sky animated by a distinctive white, spiraling cloud. Painted at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the work is often described as the daylight counterpart to The Starry Night, painted in the same period and sharing its charged, rhythmic sky. The combination of ancient trees and looming mountains creates a landscape of extraordinary visual drama, among the most celebrated works of Van Gogh’s Saint-Rémy year.
