Olive Trees, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, presents a row of gnarled, silvery-green olive trees rising from violet-toned earth beneath a pale, stippled sky, rendered in the swirling, densely worked brushwork that defines Van Gogh’s Saint-Rémy period. Between June and December 1889, while a voluntary patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Van Gogh painted some fifteen canvases of the olive groves near the hospital grounds, treating the ancient, twisting trees as a vehicle for restless experimentation with color and texture. This composition’s cool violet-and-green palette and rhythmic, almost woven surface capture the meditative intensity Van Gogh brought to this humble Provençal subject.
