Olive Orchard with Violet Soil, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889 depicts the ancient, gnarled olive trees of Provence with their grey-green foliage set against sun-baked earth striated with violet shadow, the distant hills rendered in soft blue beneath a pale sky. Van Gogh painted this work at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had admitted himself to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, and where the olive groves became one of his most sustained subjects; he completed some fifteen paintings of olive trees in his final months there. Writing to his brother Theo, he described the trees’ grey leaves and the violet shadows they cast on the sun-warmed sand, a chromatic contrast he found endlessly compelling.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1889.
