Olive Grove, c. 1889, by Vincent van Gogh depicts a stand of gnarled olive trees rendered in short, curved strokes of sage and forest green above sun-baked ochre and brown soil, beneath a restless, hatched blue-and-white sky. Van Gogh, the Dutch Post-Impressionist (1853–1890), painted the olive groves around Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, drawn to their ever-shifting color and sculptural form.
