The Olive Grove, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, depicts a grove of ancient, gnarled olive trees rendered in animated, rhythmic brushwork beneath a hazy Provençal sky, their twisted trunks rising from richly worked, rust-toned earth. Painted during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the work belongs to a series of roughly fifteen olive grove paintings Van Gogh produced when granted permission to paint in the surrounding countryside. The swirling, textured application of paint transforms an ordinary agricultural motif into a vision charged with movement and feeling, characteristic of the intensely expressive style he developed in the final years of his life.
